Cybercrime is defined as any sort of crime, that involves the use of computer or Internet. Possibly Phishing, stalking, scams etc.
These are people working alone or in small teams to commit cybercrime for example phishing, cyberstalking, and hacking other computers . It could also be an ID theft or loss of personal data.
These criminals are not doing it just to milk some money out of it. A crime committed successfully fulfills their obsession, so it makes them feel good and powerful.
Some of them are not even programmers, just copy-pasters, so they download the code from the Dark Net and use it.
Because the unorganized cybercrime really lacks rules or hierarchy, it can really get chaotic.
It was given a nickname, “the unskilled sector of cybercrime”, for it’s really low to no requirement of skill.
Organized cybercrime requires straight cooperation of larger groups of people, doing it on specific purpose.
The best example of syndicates would be “The Anonymous”. They are an organized group of hackers who primarily hack devices to get their message spread among people. Though, they’re not harmful in any sort of way, they just help in getting a message across to those who matter.
,,Anonymous’ motivation was best described as giving voice for those not heard, and responding to unanswered abuses like racism and corruption, the group says.”
There are syndicates that are not named in public; they’re just code-named by security agencies.
May or may not be country-sponsored. Cyber Terrorism causes widespread dread and even loss of life. It could be defined as follows.
,,Cyber terrorism is the use of computers and internet to cause severe disruption or widespread fear in society.’’
These types of organizations are constantly disturbing normal routine and may bring down necessary services, issue threats, harm people real bad. They sort of kidnap your data and ask for ransom for returning it. You might’ve heard of ransomware. Cybercriminals denie you acces your computer and ask for ransom in cryptocurrency for allowing access to your device .
There is news about malware that is located on your firmware. In this case, you cannot get rid of it just by factory resetting or reinstalling the software. This is horrifying – a malware writing itself on the flash ROM and staying there like glued. The only way to remove it is to flash and rewrite the firmware code without destroying your whole computer. This again requires professionals who can rewrite the firmware.
Organized Cybercrime – Corporate and State-sponsored crime
Above, were just two examples of cyber-terrorism, which are definitely not extreme cases. Extreme is when any cybercriminal destroys personal properties such as email, and website to cause direct loss to the victim of the cyberattack.
Corporate houses use hackers to lighten the competition with its rivals. They hire professional hackers to break into the networks of their competitors because of the information they want. It is most often to find out, what are their rivals planning to do.
These are hackers that work for the government. They commit cybercrime but do not go to jail because they are protected by the state immunity . Most of their work tilts towards snooping on people that are important or famous.
They attack other countries’ websites and hack into their servers for critical information.. The state hires hackers known for their skills. They then use these hackers to achieve their aim: legal or illegal
An example of state-sponsored cybercrime could be taking down very basic yet essential services of other countries. They can without any problems hack into the network of electricity department and take down the entire grid so that someone somewhere else is left without electricity for days.
State-sponsored hackers could potentially work from the security agency offices but it is most likely that they work in their aparments/caffe’s etc. They get paid when the action is done successfully.
